MAS Fluid Control is a supplier to the maritime sector of components and systems that contributes to achieve the goals and demands set by the Norwegian Government, EU and IMO. By integrating smart sensors to measure fuel use and ship-efficiency we can provide qualitative data in real-time and turn “Best-Practice” into “Informed-Practice” for all types of maritime vessels. 

 

Easy and affordable adaptations such as adding a propeller-thrust sensor can give large fuel savings from improved operations.

 

 

 

The Norwegian Government newly issued “Action Plan for Green Shipping”, the plan states an emission reduction of 50% from shipping and fishing within 2030. To achieve this the government will:

  • Consider an environmental benefit program for zero and low emission ships registered in NOS and NOR. The benefits will involve lowered fees and other advantages.

  • Strengthen the cooperation with IMO and aim to be a driving force for international reduction demands.

  • Increase the CO2 fee.

  • Reduce the electrical fee for numerous shipping and fuel activities.

  • Increase financial support towards green projects through Enova, Innovation Norway and the NOx-fond.

IMO are set to reveal new and firmer demands concerning emissions within 2020. IMO has already decided on the same 50% emission reduction as the Norwegian government, but with a time horizon of 2050.

 

 

To meet the ambitions from the Norwegian government and IMO we in MAS Fluid Control AS contribute with over 20 years’ experience in ship efficiency improvement. Our single products and integrated systems for fuel and ship efficiency monitoring has been installed in various ship types across the world with excellent results.

We facilitate exact measures of added fuel, motor efficiency and propeller force. This contributes to the optimization of operation and maintenance regime as well as provide a substantial data foundation for reporting.

 

Qualitative measured data is gathered by top of the line sensors and processed on-board before being transmitted via cloud to the office and to the ships integrated automation system. This provides a foundation for monitoring and control of individual ships in real-time and comparison of an entire fleet. The system provides full ship efficiency reports and is pre-qualified to provide automatically generated MRV reports, it is also set up to provide IMO and DNV-GL reports.

 

 

The core areas of our SEM (Ship Efficiency Monitoring) system.

 

Fuel measures:

 

Exact measures of added fuel from volumetric flowmeters and/or Coriolis flowmeters. Density and viscosity measures for correct fuel measures and optimal combustion

 

Motor and propeller efficiency:

Torque and/or thrust sensors mounted on propeller shaft for exact measures of engine load and propeller force.

 

System integration:

All systems ready for communication with existing HMI/EMS system. Can be delivered with independent SEM system for data processing and monitoring, onshore transmitting and automated report generation.

 

 

An example with a daily fuel use of 40 ton MGO/day, a fuel price of 750 USD/ton and an investment in a complete ship efficiency system [1] of approx. 78.000 USD. With a conservative reduction in fuel use of 5% will fully pay for this investment within 52 days.

 

Experience from earlier references have achieved up towards 10% improved ship efficiency which translates to 20% fuel savings. The systems have been installed with good results in various ship types including cruise vessels, ferries, offshore and fishing vessel.

 

[1] A complete ship efficiency system in the example includes torque/thrust sensor, 4 pc flowmeters, viscosity/density sensor, SPU, installation and SEM system. The system components will vary depending on ship design.
